How to Host a Clothing Swap

Refresh your wardrobe for free and give unworn clothes a second life. A little organisation makes it fair and fun.

Written by Theo Lindqvist

Most wardrobes contain clothes that are perfectly good but never worn. A swap lets everyone pass those on and take home something new to them โ€” no money spent, nothing new manufactured.

It can be a few friends in a living room or a community event.

Set some ground rules

  • Clean items in good condition only โ€” no stains, holes, or broken zips
  • A rough limit on how many items each person brings
  • Decide whether it is a free-for-all or a token system (one item in, one item out)
  • Agree in advance what happens to leftovers

Organise the space

Sort items by type or size on tables or rails as people arrive. A mirror and somewhere to try things on make a big difference. Have bags available for people to take items home.

Make it fair

Give everyone a few minutes to browse before anyone starts choosing, so early arrivals do not take everything. Some hosts let people pick one item at a time in rounds.

Leftovers

Donate unclaimed clothes to a charity shop, shelter, or textile bank. Items too worn to be reused can often go to textile recycling rather than landfill.

This is general sustainability information. Recycling, composting, and disposal rules vary by municipality โ€” check local guidance. Cost and energy savings are estimates and depend on your home and usage.
