Storing Food Without Plastic Wrap

Jars, beeswax wraps, and plates over bowls keep food fresh without cling film.

Written by Theo Lindqvist

Cling film is convenient but single-use and often not recyclable.

Most kitchens already have alternatives that work just as well.

Simple alternatives

  • Put a plate over a bowl
  • Use glass jars and containers with lids
  • Wrap sandwiches in beeswax or plant-wax wraps
  • Use silicone lids that stretch over bowls
  • Store halved fruit cut-side down on a plate

Freezing without plastic

Glass jars can be frozen if you leave space at the top for expansion. Reusable silicone bags and metal tins also work. Label with masking tape.

Caring for wax wraps

Wash in cool soapy water and air dry. Do not use with raw meat. Refresh with fresh wax when they stop sticking.

Use up existing plastic

Keep using containers you already have. The goal is reducing single-use waste, not replacing everything. See our plastic-free kitchen swaps guide.
