How you wash, dry, and store clothes makes a large difference to how long they last.
Most clothes are washed more often and hotter than they need to be.
Wash smarter
- Wash at 30°C or lower for most loads
- Turn clothes inside out
- Use the right amount of detergent
- Close zips and fastenings
- Use a laundry bag for delicates
Dry gently
Air-dry where possible. Tumble drying shrinks, fades, and wears fibres. Dry knitwear flat to prevent stretching.
Store properly
Fold knitwear rather than hanging it. Use wooden or padded hangers for shirts and coats. Protect wool from moths with cedar and regular airing.
Fix small issues early
Sew loose buttons, fix small holes, and depill jumpers before problems grow. See our mending guide.
Microfibres and synthetic fabrics
Synthetic fabrics such as polyester and nylon shed tiny plastic fibres when washed, which can reach rivers and oceans. Washing less often, using full loads, choosing cooler and shorter cycles, and using a microfibre-catching laundry bag or filter can reduce shedding. Liquid detergent and avoiding very high spin speeds may also help.
