Greener Cleaning: Simple Products That Do Most Jobs

Many households buy separate products for every surface. In reality, a small set of versatile cleaners can handle most tasks, with less packaging and less money spent.

Simple does not mean ineffective. Matching the cleaner to the job matters more than the number of bottles.

The basic kit

Washing-up liquid diluted in warm water for general cleaning
White vinegar for limescale and glass, but not for natural stone or some sealed surfaces
Bicarbonate of soda as a mild abrasive for sinks and ovens
Microfibre cloths that clean effectively with little or no product

Safety first

Never mix cleaning products, especially bleach with vinegar or ammonia-containing products, as this can produce harmful gases. Ventilate rooms while cleaning.

Reduce packaging

Buy concentrates and refills, or use refill stations. Use reusable spray bottles.

When to use stronger products

Disinfectants have a place when someone is ill or when cleaning raw meat surfaces. Use them as directed rather than for every cleaning job.

Look after cloths

Wash microfibre cloths regularly at moderate temperatures, without fabric softener, which reduces their effectiveness.

This is general sustainability information. Recycling, composting, and disposal rules vary by municipality — check local guidance. Cost and energy savings are estimates and depend on your home and usage.
