How to Reduce Plastic in the Bathroom

Bars, refills, and longer-lasting tools cut packaging without sacrificing a good routine.

Written by Theo Lindqvist

Bathrooms are full of plastic bottles, tubes, and disposable items, many of which are hard to recycle.

You do not need to replace everything at once. Swap items as they run out.

Easy swaps

  • Bar soap instead of liquid hand wash
  • Shampoo and conditioner bars
  • Refillable deodorant
  • A safety razor or razor with replaceable blades
  • Reusable cotton pads

Refills

Many refill shops and some supermarkets offer shampoo, shower gel, and hand wash by volume. Large refill pouches still use plastic but much less than many small bottles.

Recycle what you can

Many people recycle kitchen packaging but forget bathroom bottles. Keep a small recycling bin in the bathroom. Rinse bottles and check local rules for pumps and caps.

Use it up

The most sustainable choice is to use products you already have before switching. Avoid buying new โ€œecoโ€ items that replicate things you already own.

This is general sustainability information. Recycling, composting, and disposal rules vary by municipality โ€” check local guidance. Cost and energy savings are estimates and depend on your home and usage.
