Choosing Energy-Efficient Appliances

Energy labels help, but size and how you use appliances matter just as much.

Written by Leah Okafor

Fridges, freezers, washing machines, and dryers account for a large share of home electricity use.

When replacing them, efficiency counts.

Read labels

Energy labels show annual consumption. Compare kWh figures, not just letter ratings.

Right size

  • A larger fridge uses more energy
  • Choose capacity to match your household
  • Avoid running a second fridge if not needed

Heat pump dryers

Heat pump tumble dryers use much less energy than vented or condenser models.

Repair first

Repairing an existing appliance avoids manufacturing impacts. See our electronics repair guide.

Use appliances efficiently

How you use appliances matters as much as their rating. Keep fridges at around 3–5°C and freezers at about −18°C, leave space around them for ventilation, and defrost freezers when ice builds up. Run washing machines and dishwashers with full loads on eco settings. Turn off appliances at the wall when not in use for long periods. See our reduce standby power guide.

This is general sustainability information. Recycling, composting, and disposal rules vary by municipality — check local guidance. Cost and energy savings are estimates and depend on your home and usage.
