Repair Before You Replace: Keeping Electronics Going Longer

Most of a device’s environmental footprint comes from making it. Keeping it running longer is the greener choice.

Written by Leah Okafor

Phones, laptops, and tablets are often replaced because of a cracked screen, a tired battery, or slow performance — problems that can often be fixed for a fraction of the price of a new device.

Extending a device’s life by even a year or two reduces its overall impact noticeably.

Common fixes worth considering

  • Battery replacement for phones and laptops that no longer last the day
  • Screen replacement after cracks
  • Extra storage or memory for older laptops
  • Reinstalling the operating system to fix sluggishness
  • Replacing charging ports clogged with lint or damaged by wear

Where to get help

Manufacturer repair services are reliable but can be expensive. Independent repair shops are often cheaper; check reviews and ask about warranties on parts. Community repair cafés offer free help from volunteers and are a good place to learn.

Look after it in the first place

A good case and screen protector prevent most physical damage. Avoid leaving devices in hot cars or charging them under pillows, as heat ages batteries. Many devices offer optimised charging settings that slow battery wear.

When it is time to let go

When a device is beyond economical repair, sell it, trade it in, or donate it if it still works. Otherwise take it to an electronics recycling point. Wipe your data first, and remove SIM and memory cards.

This is general sustainability information. Recycling, composting, and disposal rules vary by municipality — check local guidance. Cost and energy savings are estimates and depend on your home and usage.
