Green Energy Tariffs: What They Really Mean

Not all green tariffs are equal. Here is how to tell the difference.

Written by Theo Lindqvist

Many energy suppliers sell “green” or “renewable” tariffs. But what you actually get varies.

Some tariffs support new renewable generation; others mainly involve certificates.

How green tariffs work

Electricity on the grid is mixed, so you cannot get only renewable electrons. Suppliers match your use with renewable generation, either by buying directly from generators or by buying certificates.

Questions to ask

  • Does the supplier own or contract directly with renewable generators?
  • What proportion is backed by certificates alone?
  • Is gas included, and how is it offset?
  • Is the supplier investing in new capacity?

Reduce use first

Using less energy is the most effective step. See our guides on cutting home energy use and reducing standby power.

Other options

Rooftop solar panels, community energy schemes, and time-of-use tariffs that encourage using power when renewables are plentiful are other ways to make a difference.

This is general sustainability information. Recycling, composting, and disposal rules vary by municipality — check local guidance. Cost and energy savings are estimates and depend on your home and usage.
